What are emulators and how do I make games work?

This post is primarily meant for those who are still unsure as to how to go about using emulators.

I would like to start off with a basic explanation of what emulators are. Emulators can be considered to be the actual gaming devices (i.e. Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, etc) used to launch ROMs, which are the games.

Let’s assume you want to play Super Nintendo ROMs. What you would first want to do is download a game in .smc format, and then you will need to download a Super Nintendo emulator to make your game work. Browse our SNES emulators section and follow the same downloading steps as before. The emulator you use is a personal preference and thus doesn’t really matter. For the purpose of my explanation, I will suggest downloading ZSNES 1.51. After downloading your emulator .zip file to your desktop, extract all files to the same location as your .smc game file that you already downloaded. Now, what you will want to do is open up the .exe (executable) file which in this case will be named “zsnesw”. After launching the application, you will then be able to click on “File” and load your .smc ROM file from the desktop.

Keep in mind that each download file already has step-by-step instructions on how to go about using emulators. If you still have trouble though, feel free to contact us and we will help you through the process.
